Aerospace Manufacturing:
FOD Prevention Program
In Aerospace manufacturing, one of the most prominent risks that has come under the microscope over the last few decades is foreign object damage and debris, or FOD. FOD is a high risk throughout the entire supply chain of manufacturing as there are some many unavoidable areas of introduction. With that in mind, developing and sustaining a highly effective FOD prevention program has become a top priority in the industry. Below is a sample FOD Prevention Program that I developed for an Aerospace Manufacturing Company intended to be used throughout the entire manufacturing facility, from the front offices to the shipping docks.
The matrix is a attempt to quantify FOD risk. Each section has a description and rating. The process owner is expected to honestly assess each element of the process and assign a score to it. At the end, the score is added up and the final number is used to determine the level of FOD risk associated with the process.
This poster is intended to be used alongside the procedure above. These posters would be issued to all areas of the facility and used as visual indicators of FOD risks and what steps are taken in a given are to eliminate FOD exposure. Information gathered during the FOD assessment should be used to fill out the poster.
